Modular Exhibition Stands That Don't Look Modular

If you've ever walked around a trade show and thought every modular exhibition stand looks the same, you're not alone. 

For years, modular systems earned a reputation for being practical but uninspiring. White aluminium frames, basic graphics and very little individuality meant many exhibitors assumed the only way to achieve a premium look was with a completely bespoke stand. 

Fortunately, that's no longer the case. 

Modern modular exhibition stands have evolved significantly. Advances in printed fabric graphics, illuminated lightboxes, architectural features and custom finishes mean today's modular systems can deliver a stand that looks every bit as impressive as a traditional timber build while offering greater flexibility, lower lifetime costs and a much more sustainable approach.

Two of our projects at MACH 2026 at the NEC demonstrate exactly why modular doesn't mean "off the shelf". 

The Same System. Two Completely Different Exhibition Stands. 

One of the biggest advantages of a modular exhibition stand is that the framework is simply the starting point. 

Think of it like building a house. Two properties may share the same structural method, but the architecture, layout and finishes can make them feel completely different. The same principle applies to exhibition stand design. 

At MACH 2026, we designed and built modular exhibition stands for The Sempre Group (now IVMS) and Accretech. Although both projects were built using the same modular system, the finished stands reflected two very different businesses with very different objectives. Neither of them looked like a modular system. 

The Sempre Group (Now IVMS): Creating an Architectural Presence 

The brief from The Sempre Group was to create a stand that felt open, modern and visually striking while showcasing multiple technologies. 

To achieve this, we designed a four-metre-high modular structure with timber-effect printed fabric graphics, angled illuminated lightboxes and several dedicated product demonstration areas. 

Rather than allowing the framework to dictate the layout, every design decision was made to reinforce the client's brand and encourage visitors onto the stand. The result was a clean, architectural space that stood out on a busy exhibition floor, demonstrating perfectly that modular construction can still deliver a premium finish. 

Accretech: Designed Around Live Demonstrations 

Accretech's requirements were completely different. 

Instead of focusing primarily on visual impact, the stand needed to support continuous live machine demonstrations throughout the exhibition. 

We incorporated six dedicated product stations with concealed underfloor compressed air services, things that traditionally people don't think can be achieved with a modular exhibition stand approach. This was complemented with a spacious storeroom and multiple meeting areas where visitors could speak with the sales team without interrupting demonstrations. 

From a visitor's perspective, everything appeared clean and effortless. Behind the scenes, however, careful planning ensured that power, compressed air, storage and visitor flow all worked together seamlessly. 

Although the stand used the same modular system as the IVMS project, the final result looked and functioned entirely differently because it was designed around a different business and a different visitor experience.
